International Overdose Awareness Day: Together we can

Posted On :

International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of substance abuse on individuals, families, and communities.

“At SANCA Wedge Gardens, we witness first-hand the challenges faced by those struggling with addiction,” says Adèl Grobbelaar, who heads up the Johannesburg-based treatment centre.

The theme of this year’s campaign is ‘Together we can’. Grobbelaar explains the message behind the theme: No one should stand alone in the fight to end overdose.

She says that the stigma surrounding death by overdose must end so that society can talk about the heartbreak that comes with losing a loved one to overdose, and how getting help in time can reduce the number of lives lost in this tragic way.

Overdose can affect anyone, says. “It is essential to recognise that overdose is not merely a statistic; it is a tragic loss of life. Every individual who succumbs to overdose is a person with dreams, hopes, and loved ones. Their absence leaves an irreplaceable void.

“On this day, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives to overdose. Your grief is immeasurable, and we stand with you in solidarity.”

She says that addiction is a complex disease that requires compassion, understanding, and evidence-based treatment. “At SANCA Wedge Gardens, we provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can embark on their journey to recovery. Through our holistic programmes, we empower individuals to reclaim their lives and rebuild their futures.”

Grobbelaar says that prevention is key to combating the overdose crisis. Education, early intervention, and access to quality treatment are vital components of a comprehensive approach. “By fostering open dialogue about substance abuse and reducing stigma, we can create a society where individuals feel supported in seeking help.

“Let us come together on this International Overdose Awareness Day to honour the lives lost and to recommit ourselves to creating a world free from the devastating consequences of overdose.”
