Fourth year Wits OT students Amy Grose and Victoria Johnstone organised and hosted a sports day for the in-patients at Rand Aid’s Wedge Gardens treatment centre on Thursday, June 9, 2016.
The event formed part of the students’ university requirements, with the aim of promoting health and wellness whilst facilitating cohesion and a sense of group belonging. The Wedge residents divided themselves into teams and rotated between four activity stations, including soccer, volleyball, 30 Seconds and ‘The Amazing Race’. It was a highly-anticipated event and the residents played an active role in the planning and preparation. “They made posters to advertise the sports day, as well as refreshments, which included popcorn, cupcakes and marshmallow sticks,” says Wedge Gardens occupational therapist Zainab Badat, who oversees the Wits students.
